BARBOS EDGE OUT A STRONG QUEEN CITY

The Denver Barbarians don’t just have their sights set on winning the Rocky Mountain Rugby Premiership (national D2), we decided as an executive council that we owed in to our players to also compete in the Rocky Mountain Rugby Championship (national D3) as well. It will allow us to give players valuable and much needed game time, while also raising the competitive level of the RMR as a whole.

The men in Green & White finished out their first two game sweep by defeating the Queen City Rams 35-17 (after dispatching Boulder in the previous match). Captain Todd Oswald led the men to a well earned victory in a battle that started tight and kept its intensity throughout the match.

The game opened up in a physical manner, with QC going down to 14 men after their scrummy was sent to the bin for 10 mins. Barbos drew first points, a penalty through the boot of the captain Todd Oswald. Queen City responded by scoring the fist try, securing a (short lived 5-3) lead. It was then the wiry and wily Reed Ronan dove over the line for the men in Green & White. Successful Oswald conversion went 10-5. Another penalty, another Oswald strike through the posts (man this guy can kick it!) Barbos lead 13-5.

And that’s where the score seemed to stick. Barbos led 13-5 until QC struck back and scored … the game (and scoring) was snarled up at 13-10 thanks to some tenacious defense from both teams. Queen City stand outs Iosefo Selevasio and Ilaitia Sesebualala ran hard running lines throughout the afternoon.

The Barbos struck next through the electric quick feet of Benny (the Jet) Ferrazza. The Colorado School of Mines alum has been a difference maker since the return of his torn thumb ligament this summer. His ability to make a break with minimal daylight is what keeps the BarboFam on their feet every time he touches the ball.

After steering the ship at scrum half, Devarius “Beanie” Miller scored a try of his own, darting around a ruck and scoring in the corner to bring the score to 23-10. The final two tries were scored by veterans Brett DeBoy and Leland Beatley, and the final whistle blew with a 35-17 score.

The Denver Barbarians and Queen City are two clubs with great rugby history. Below are some pictures from a clash back in 2008.
